Special AIDS Walk Dedication to Upile
October 17th will mark the 26th Annual LA AIDS Walk and I’ll be out there again this year, supporting a cause that is very near to my life and heart. This year however I have a special dedication. This year team EveButterflies is walking for Upile.
Upile’s war on AIDS is not unique in Malawi. There are many children like her battling this undiscriminating disease that has wiped out generations. Children are being burdened with a load we adults in our modern societies would have difficulties enduring. Yet so many just like Upile are smiling, wanting to go to school and turning rocks into toys to play games. Seeing this great spirit was a gift, a reminder that we are not alone on this planet and if we all did a little something, we could make bountiful changes. A perfect example of this is Marie da Silva. Marie who grew up in Malawi created the Jacaranda Foundation, a free school for orphans where I met Upile . She used her nanny wages to create the school and with help from friends had minimally kept the school running. She received worldwide recognition for her work and now the school has grown into a safe haven for over 400 orphans, who otherwise would have no educational opportunities. Many are AIDS orphans just like Upile and unfortunately some are AIDS sufferers themselves. After Upile passed Marie saw the need to have a school nurse and also a school bus. You see even though AIDS medication is free in Malawi, those living in these remote villages have no means to get to the hospital. Marie’s foundation is now the means, not only for the students but also for their extended families.
It’s an ongoing necessity to find funding for the foundation. Every year more students would like to join and paying the staff, providing shoes, clothes, food, books and even now medical care is unending cycle. If you think you could make a difference in any amount please see the Jacaranda Foundation and see how far a little bit can go.

Feet Diaries: The Walk Of 2010
As 2010 is coming to a close and I’m moving into the next phase of life, I find myself reflecting on the walk my feet have taken this year. It has not been a steady pace by any means, I found myself coasting, climbing and literally as well as proverbially running and sliding and slipping through the mud. Through the ups, downs and turn arounds I’ve had an incredible chronicle to digest and I’m finally taking the time to tell the tale of my feet, as they jumped from West to East, East to West and a few stops in between. It’s been a time of great accomplishment as I walked through the highs and lows of humanity and witnessed the disparate ends of remarkable compassion to hopeless desperation, which has taught me volumes about the human spirit, and myself.
Along the journey I met lifelong friends, some of which I love as family now and strangers that will haunt my dreams for years. I’ve been welcomed into the most intimate of settings and embraced like I had always been there. I will forever be changed by what I experienced along the road to fulfilling desires and aspirations that were harder than I’d ever imagined and took strength I wasn’t aware was hidden in my arsenal. I’ve gained a world experience as I tested the waters of strange lands and through it all I grew a true appreciation for those who stand with me, new additions to my world, of course, but especially those right here at home, where I’ve had a family all along.
These are The Diaries Of My Feet – 2010.
To be continued: First Step Malawi
India
So India truly was a mixed bag of emotions and encounters, some areas were the hardest I’ve experienced as a woman traveling alone and some were closely touching the surface of perfection. I still feel I left too much unseen and experienced but such is life. Some day, with my learnings to keep me firmly planted in realism as a tourist and female in the vast land that is India, I will return. Here’s a glimpse of what I saw in my travels. Hope you enjoy!Ocean Feet

Looking For A Way to Make DIfference?
As I am reviewing my video footage from my recent Malawi trip, I am sadly reminded of the alarming state of poverty that children are living under there. Hunger forces people into impossible choices just to survive – children are taken out of school, women are forced into high-risk sexual behavior, agriculture is constrained by economic isolation, high transport costs, growing environmental degradation and depleted soils. It’s heartbreaking for me to watch as I interview children and ask them what they need, what they want and if someone was willing to help them by sending packages, what is it they would like to receive. Incredulity, at overwhelming numbers, about 98% of the children asked for food. Not toys, not clothing, the most basic survival need, food. Can you imagine? If your child had to actually think about wonder when they would able to have a meal? Children are going to school on empty stomachs, carrying empty cups that will be filled with what may be their only meal of the day. For the over 40% of children unable to afford school, they are wondering when they will have a next meal. Children are literally dying from hunger. I write this because I’ve seen how far just a little funding can go to help these children. This trip changed how I see purchases I make. Do I really need another candle, overpriced handbag or drop a Benjamin on one meal? Knowing that $140 can feed 200 orphans 3 meals a week? Small alterations I make here, can help a child there. If we all micro-altered, our lives, we could wipe out hunger. Have you thought of ways your could help? Let me know if you’d like to make a difference. I know of many ways that you can help.SEEING RED
Looking back at photos and recalling a moment’s emotions is one of my most beloved diversions. A stimulated memory is the beautiful way to recall a smell, a smile, a physical sensation or a strong passion. These are the very reasons I eagerly keep up on my random photo logging hobby. Looking over the last week’s shots I noticed a pattern of color in my logs, I’m seeing red. It made me think, what is the attraction to red? What is the significance? Is the universe is trying to tell me something? I think so, I choose to heed the signs my world is sending me. After a little research, here’s what I could find on Red. Aside from from how I can personally apply this, I find it quite the dichotomous twist, that Red it is the color for Love AND War. How closely related the stimulants of love and hate are, yet how much easier it is for people to hate.
Meaning of the Color Red
Red has more personal associations than any other color. Recognized as a stimulant red is inherently exciting and the amount of red is directly related to the level of energy perceived. Red draws attention and a keen use of red as an accent can immediately focus attention on a particular element. Red is the warmest of all colors. Red is the color most chosen by extroverts and one of the top picks of males. On the negative side red can mean temper or anger. In China, red is the color of prosperity and joy. Brides wear red and front doors are often painted red. Red is Tuesday’s color. Red roses symbolize passionate love.
Red Energy
Red is associated with fiery heat and warmth. It can also mean danger (burning).
Red is the color of blood, and as such has strong symbolism as life and vitality. It brings focus to the essence of life and living with emphasis on survival. Red is also the color of passion and lust.
Put some red in your life when you want to:
- increase enthusiasm and interest
- stimulate energy
- encourage action and confidence to go after your dreams
- sense a protection from fears and anxieties
Red gemstones can be used to strengthen the body, promote will power and courage, add vitality, and overcome sexual dysfunctions. Carry or place red gemstones around your home or office to stimulate vitality and energy.
Wearing Red
Wear a red accent piece when you want to present yourself as bold and dynamic. It can boost your confidence if you are attending a function or interview where you feel unsure of yourself.
If a woman wears a red dress it usually is associated with sex appeal.
Chakra associated with Red:
Red is the color associated with the Root Chakra at the base of the spine (animal or base nature). This chakra deals with life at the level of practicality. It is responsible for maintaining the body’s heat and has a relationship with the circulatory system.
